MmWave antenna array configuration is a challenging task in vehicular applications. Due to high mobility, vehicles suffer from frequent blockages of trucks, buses, etc, and therefore potential coverage holes, which require on-time beam re-alignment to maintain reliable transmission links. Beam sweeping, however, is inadequate in satisfying the ultra-low overhead and latency requirement. The key to a feasible mmWave vehicular beam configuration method is the ubiquitous side information in vehicular systems, which makes everything connected and equips the vehicles with situational awareness. The situational awareness of vehicles and machine learning tools can be leveraged to predict the beam information, including the optimal beam pair index, beam power as well as to formulate joint optimization problems such as link adaptation, scheduling and BS handover. The rich contexts in situational awareness create a more intelligent learner and make it possible to establish a low-overhead highly automated mmWave vehicular system.
